We were both working at Macy’s and at other chiropractic offices in Baltimore and D.C., saving up the money needed to open our own office.

We got the office open on a shoestring budget. Matt’s mom and brother came out to help with the flooring and upholstering the chairs. We got our office chairs from Craigslist. We painted them and put new leather on them. We got the flooring from Lowe’s, on clearance. We ripped up the old carpet that came with the building. We painted the walls. We found a great local contractor to put some new walls up.

We did most of the work in our free time, usually with our family there helping out.

A lot of businesses open up with a bunch of money already in the bank. Good for them. We opened up with just barely enough to get the place rented, built out, inspected, and furnished. We didn’t take home any pay for the first half year or so. It was difficult, but that’s what life is like sometimes.

We are not the fanciest office. That’s OK.The fancy stuff isn’t what gets people better, anyway. We don’t have any really expensive stuff. But we are down-to-Earth, we treat you right, and we operate our business with integrity. We will treat you like family if you are one of our patients.
